While it appears that American soda consumption is finally starting to decline according to a recent Harvard study, we are still much higher the limit that is recommended by the government. Sugary drinks not only negatively impact your teeth and oral health, they also affect your overall health and well being.

Eliminating or at least limiting your intake of sugar is a good goal to have for the upcoming new year. Here are some things to keep in mind when limiting your consumption of sugary drinks and beverages.

Be Aware of Hidden Sugars

Always read the labels of the foods and beverages you eat and drink. You might be surprised to see how much sugar is in these products that you weren't aware of. You also may be shocked to learn that drinks you thought were "healthy" are actually heavily laden with harmful sugars.

For example, you know that soda contains high amounts of sugar, but how about your morning orange juice? Did you know that most fruit juices are actually high in sugar and acids, which are both harmful for your teeth. Take the time to educate yourself about the products you consume.

Don't Add Additional Sugar to Your Drinks

While coffee helps many of us get going in the morning, it is also highly acidic. When you add additional items to your coffee such as sugar or other sweeteners, it presents a double whammy for your teeth, as sugar fuels the bacteria that produce the acids that cause tooth decay. Essentially, you are adding fuel to the fire. Try enjoying your coffee and tea straight without any added sweeteners.

Visit Your Gaithersburg Dentist Regularly

Routine visits to the dentist every six months are your first line of defense against tooth decay and the damage that sugar causes. If you are looking for the best dentist in the 20879 area, look no further than Lakeforest Dental Associates.
