Are Sugars Hiding in Your Favorite Drink?

X-Ray | Dental Exams in Gaithersburg MD

People thrive with a well-balanced and healthy diet, but too many sugary drinks are directly marketed to consumers. Also, excessive sugar is sometimes hidden in drinks touted as healthy.

At Lakeforest Dental Associates, we as a family dental office want to provide you with good information to make informed decisions when it comes to sugary beverages.

Fruit Juice

Fruit juice may seem like a healthy alternative to soft drinks, and it is certainly better than soda. However, you might be surprised to learn just how much sugar hides in fruit juice.

Orange juice, for example, is loaded with sugar. The addition of citric acid with this sugar makes the beverage hard on teeth and may even lead to cavities. This doesn’t mean you cannot have fruit juice. It means rinsing with plain water and then brushing teeth about 30 minutes following consumption!

While milk doesn’t taste particularly sweet, it does contain sugar, which is why a glass of milk before bed—hours before or after brushing—is not recommended. At bedtime, try a glass of milk before brushing and flossing, but not after!

You don't have to remove milk altogether from your diet, but make sure brushing and flossing are optimized (at least twice per day) to combat the sugar in milk.

Water Is Our Recommendation

In our Gaithersburg, MD dental office, we recommend water. Not only is it a great for hydration, but it quenches thirst and is very refreshing without a drop of added sugar! Water also cleanses the pallet, which can be beneficial between brushing and flossing.
