December's Resolution - Use Your Dental Benefits before the Year Ends!

Have you planned your December resolution? Yes, you heard that right;  most of us plan our New Year's resolutions, but perhaps you didn't know you needed a December resolution? Here is what it should be: I will maximize my dental insurance benefits before the end of the year.

Dental Insurance 101

Most dental plans run on a calendar year system, meaning they start in January and end in December. Your plan likely has a yearly maximum amount it will pay for treatment, and unfortunately, those dollars won't roll over into next year's benefits. You have to use them in 2017 or lose them in 2018.

Your plan may also have a deductible to be paid before major treatment can be covered. If you've had dental work done this year, you may have already paid that deductible, which will also renew in January.

What this all means for you is that if you have outstanding treatment that needs to be completed, it may save you money to have your treatment completed before the end of 2017.

Not Sure if You Need Treatment?

The first thing to do is to contact your dentist and make sure that you've had both of your cleanings and checkups for the year. These are typically covered by your dental insurance, which means very little if any out of pocket cost for you. It is at these appointments that your dentist will screen you for issues such as gum disease, oral cancer, tooth decay, and make you aware of any treatment you might need.

If you have already been to your dentist twice this year, you can call them to determine if you have any outstanding treatment to be completed for 2017.
